The Dutch left after WWII, and this area became the province of Irian Jaya in Indonesia. It's now called West Papua.

The kids (Clay's age) carry knives for foraging (and fighting over) edible plants on the side of the trail. As you can see from their picture, they live in the mud and seem to have no desire to wipe their runny noses. |
